Want to plan a garden for a predetermined yield?
Want an idea how efficient different garden configurations are?
Can my garden produce more than I'm getting now with my setup?
Wonder what the yield might be when you upgrade your garden?
Wonder about the differences between soil and hydro?
How does lighting effect yield?
What will my garden yield if....?
This is not a competition, but rather an attempt to document what
is really going on out there. Answers to the above questions
(and possibly others) may become "very" obvious as this data
grows, maybe not. I believe this list holds info for the MAJOR
factors that influence yield, except for the eternally variable
seed, and TLC.
ALL info is based on yield per square foot of garden canopy. This
seems to be a unit of measurement that almost anyone can relate to.
This way no one needs to disclose the size of the entire garden,
and can compare theirs to any on the list regardless of size.
It's hoped that those wishing to contribute to the data do so with
accurate KNOWN figures. Guesses just water down its usefulness.
To contribute "post a reply" with your info (see below), just
modify the subject line by adding *NEW* to the end of it. Using
an anonymous remailer to post is always a good idea. I hope to be
able to add to the ongoing list from the posts until there are
enough different garden configurations listed to give a good
sampling. This should be interesting.
Needless to say the more entries there are, the better and more
reliable the data becomes. I'll make an effort to follow "valid"
posts and periodically repost a new list. I may miss some.
One final point. Whether or not you care to contribute to this
endeavor don't overlook it's value. Keeping data of this nature
for one's own subsequent crops will allow you to look back and
gauge your degree of success, as long as yield is the criteria.
I doubt if any of you will grow your next crop without trying to
improve something over this one. Maximizing yield is just one
aspect of cultivating this thing we call cannabis. Having an
edge in doing so can go a long way.
All we need now are more entries to the list.
How about it folks, post yer yields.

This requires an "accurate" measurement of the garden's canopy.
The canopy is the green mass of growth that faces the primary
light source, usually above the plants. Floor/shelf space is
NOT the same as canopy area unless your canopy is contained
within those same dimensions. Canopy could also be described as
the horizontal area you expect to fill with growth, or confine
the growth to.
With gardens designed for side lighting, measure the area of the
sides where the lighting is installed.
(for Phototrons use 8.00 square ft)
If you didn't confine the growth to an area, or didn't know what
growth to expect, take an actual measurement of the canopy at harvest
then convert it to square feet. Use that as your canopy sq ft.
If you need help with the math, get it. NO GUESSES PLEASE.
(To convert sq metre to sq feet multiply sq metre by 10.76)

About Seq(uence) numbers:
Numbers followed by a letter indicate a component entry.
Numbers followed by a + sign indicate supplemental info about an entry,
where that info could occupy only one field in the original entry.
------------------------------------------------------
** GRAMS DRYWT (required field) **
Dry Weight in Grams (per square foot of canopy), and the method used
to determine that weight.
Dry weight is considered to be 25% of the fresh weight. If all you
have is fresh weight use 1/4 of that figure, or multiply by .25 to get
dry weight. Once you have the dry weight total, divide it by the
canopy square footage (as calculated above) to arrive at the dry weight
per square foot of canopy.
If you weigh ounces, multiply that figure by 28.4 to get grams.
Although dry weight is easier to relate to for most people, fresh weight
is a more accurate measure of yield because it doesn't vary with the
degree of dryness or personal preferences of the grower. If your dry
weight was "calculated from fresh weight", please add the suffix "c"
after the GRAMS DRYWT figure. Likewise, add a "d" if it was weighed dry.
This will earmark entries for those wishing to use "actual" fresh or dry
weights for their analysis. In all cases the figure shown will still be
the DRY weight, either real or calculated. The suffix simply shows which
entries were calculated as opposed to actual. As of Feb 1999 this info
is required.
For those wishing to extapolate fresh weight from calculated dry
weight, simply multiply the calculated dry weight by 4.
------------------------------------------------------
** HVST (harvest) (required field) **
Is your reported weight that of:
MAN = manicured buds (non-resinous leaves removed)
RAW = raw buds (before manicuring)
LEF = leaves only (all leaves including those manicured from buds if any)
ALL = the entire harvest inclucing undergrowth but not woody stems
Try to supply manicured bud weight if at all possible, this is
what most of us really want to know. In any event DO mention
which of the above your weight includes so that it's valid,
and not questionable.
------------------------------------------------------
** WATTS/LIGHTING (required field) **
Wattage (per square foot of canopy) & light type.
Add the watts rating of all your bulbs used during flowering,
then divide that figure by the square feet of canopy (as calculated
above). That's your watts per square foot.
Include the type(s) of lights used
HPS = High Pressure Sodium
MH = Metal Halide
MV = Mercury Vapor
FLOR = Fluorescent
INDICATOR CHARACTERS for light types:
+ = Multiple top lighting types
/ = Side lighting prefix
\ = Phototron additional light prefix
* = Light mover suffix
! = Sequential lighting suffix
T = Phototron suffix
If a combination of different types are used for top lighting
use a + (plus character) between each in the list.
eg: HPS+MH
When side lighting is used to augment top lighting it will follow
the other light types in the list separated by a / (slash character).
eg: HPS+MH/FLOR
Sidelight "only" gardens will have the entire light type entry
prefixed with a / (slash character).
eg: /FLOR
If a light mover was employed add an asterisk after the light type(s).
eg: HPS+MH*/FLOR
Sequential Lighting is used occasionally, and will be indicated by an
exclamation character "!" following the light type. This means that
lights other than those shown in the entry were used briefly to either
initiate flowering, or as a transtition buffer to prepare plants for the
lights to be used for the majority of the flowering time. They could
have been of a different type and wattage. In all cases, the light types
and watts/sq ft listed in the entry were the primary lights used to bring
the crop to harvest. (NOTE: If a light other than the primary flowering
light was used during early flowering, and you know for how many days, it
would be helpful if you could include that info. See the NOTE at the
bottom of the Avail Lumens instructions below for some related info.)
Special Phototron Users Note: /FLOR is the default phototron lighting
configuration and should be used for all trons. When other lights are
used to augment the trons default (whether thru the top or sides of the
unit), that light type will follow the default and be prefixed with a \
backslash character. In all cases, tron light type will end with a space
then "T" to indicate the unit was a Tron.
eg: /FLOR T indicates a standard tron lighting configuration.
/FLOR\FLOR T indicates additional fluoros were used with a tron.
------------------------------------------------------
** MEDIUM (required field) **
SOIL = Soil based mediums or soil mixes. *ALL* nutrients are to be
found in the medium. They are earthen in nature. The
intended use is that plain water will keep the nutrients in a
form usable by plants, and that "infrequent" feeding with
soluble fertilizers "may" be necessary with indoor plants in
lieu of adding more nutrient rich soil via repotting.
HYDR = Hydroponic mediums are inert. *NO* nutrients are found in the
medium, *ALL* nutrients are supplied in solution.
FORT = Fortified mediums are those containing nutrients (or nutrient
bearing amendments) but not supplied in adequate quantities
to sustain plant growth for the life of the plant. The
intended use is that "regular frequent" feeding with a soluble
N-P-K fertilizer containing trace and secondary elements "is"
necessary. Typically this medium type is not earthen in nature
and eventually requires use of hydroponic techniques. Some
soilless mixes fall into this category.
TRON = Phototron, use this as a medium entry "only" if you use Pyraponics
medium and nutrients. If you use a Phototron but don't use
Pyroponics methods then enter either SOIL, HYDR, or FORT whichever
is more appropriate.
------------------------------------------------------
** STOCK (required field) **
Plants for this crop were derived from:
SEED = Plants are from germinated seeds
CLON = Clones
MIX = Combination of clones and plants from seed
REVE = Plants revegetated from flowering plants
Seed vs clone stock is included to indicate that possibly males have been
removed thus leaving a canopy that "could" have yielded more with the
given hardware. With clones I feel it's safe to assume a full canopy.
------------------------------------------------------
** avail lumens (optional) **
Available Lumens per Square Foot.
This is a new field as of May 2001, it is comprised of a lumen value and a
qualifier suffix stating how the lumens were determined. What makes this
optional data different from the rest is that it will appear in every entry
whether or not the contributor supplied the lumen data.
While it is greatly appreciated when optional information is offered in a
YOR contribution, for security reasons it's never been a requirement for someone
to disclose information that could be used to determine the actual size of his
indoor garden or the total elecric power needed to operate it. For all intents
and purposes each garden is just one square foot in size. Regardless, YOR
contributors often offer much more detail than required for an entry. Where it
relates to light, this detail is most often in the form of the actual wattage of
the lamps being used. Even more detail can come in the form of the manufacturers
lumens specifications for the lamps, or a light measurement taken by the grower
with a meter. In the YOR's new Available Lumens field, the qualifier following
the lumens figure will point to one of the above as being the source for the
lumen information. If no information but the required watts/sq ft is offered,
the lumen value will be estimated at the time the entry is placed in the YOR.
A review of all pre-existing YOR contributions was conducted to determine the
lumen value for their entries, future contributions will be handled according
to the level of optional detail supplied by the contributor. Either you can
supply lumen/sq ft info yourself or it will be calculated at the time the entry
is placed into the YOR, from whatever info you made available, and the appropriate
qualifier character attached to it. The most accurate data is supplied by the
grower, so if at all possible it would be best to at least look up the lumen
output of YOUR bulb(s) at the manufacturers web site.
Below are the four qualifiers and a descrtiption of how each is used to determine lumens.
The qualifier characters are.....
(M)easured
(S)pecificatons
(D)erived
(E)stimated
(M)easured
Measured with a light meter, usually in foot candles (fc), 1fc=1lumen.
Readings are taken at the flowering growth, from each square foot, then
averaged over the total sq ft of canopy area by the contributor.
(S)pecifications
The manufacturers actual lumen output specifications for the particular
bulb(s) is known by the contributor and averaged over the total canopy area.
(D)erived
This is used when the bulb(s) wattage(s) is offered by the contributor, but
Specs or Measured lumens are not known. Lumens are derived from the LPW Table
using the LPW value found under the known bulb wattage, or the bulb with the
closest watt rating. The LPW figure is then applied to the contributors w/sq ft.
(E)stimated
This is used when only the watts/sq ft and light type(s) are known. Lumens
are estimated using the Avg LPW figures found in the LPW Table then, depending
on the nature of the lighting type(s), is applied to a standard formula which
makes assumptions about the lighting.
NOTE: A lower case qualifier may appear in an entry that contains the Sequential
lighting character (an exclamation ! point). This indicates a "weighted"
lumen value. It was calculated using the number of flowering days for each
light (when both are known), thus accounting for the lumen differences from
each light over the total flowering period. The formula is:
(light1 lumens x days use) + (light2 lumens x days use), total lumens are
then divided by the total days.
------------------------------------------------------
** plants per sq ft (optional) **
Plant spacing.
You can include as an option the number of plants/sq ft (divide the number
of plants by the sq ft of canopy). The results will be posted as
MEDIUM STOCK 0.00. eg-HYDR CLON 0.08 would indicate one plant with a 12 sq
ft canopy, and HYDR,CLON 1.00 would indicate one plant/sq ft of canopy.
------------------------------------------------------
** variety (optional) ** (Click here to view the Variety Key)
Because almost all contributors have included their variety, and many
feel it important to list, I've created a key to reference same. The
key lists only generic varieties, any subsequent crosses or sub-varieties
are noted in the entry by using the "x" indicator to show a crossed breed
was created (eg- AxB). Multiple varieties are separated by a comma
(eg- A,B). Since we're looking at yield, when mention is made of
multiple varieties in one harvest, there's no way to know how much of
the yield is for which variety.
To make variety data more useful where multiple varieties are harvested
from a single crop, I've included harvest component entries as of 9/98.
These are entries which will have a letter following the (Seq)uence #,
and each component entry will focus on just one variety taken from a
regular entry which included multiple varieties. A regular entry must
still be made for the entire harvest. In other words, the component
entries will simply be a breakdown (by variety) of your original YOR
contribution. In an attempt to further complicate things:-), a
component entry will be further isolated by the case of the suffix letter
following the seq#. An UPPER CASE suffix indicates data is the average
of many plants where an individual breakdown of each plant is unknown,
a lower case suffix indicates data for just one plant. A different
suffix letter will be used for each variety.
Only plants grown from commercially available seeds will be listed as
components. If a variety isn't available to those who read the YOR
there's no point listing it. Where multiple clones (not seeds) were used
only one component will be entered as the average taken from those clones.
Include the "breeder" of the seed when known and it will be listed with
the variety for that component. If your crop is just one variety, you
can include the breeder without a component. PLEASE NOTE: The breeder is
NOT necessarily the same place the seeds were purchased. If you're not
sure the breeder and the place of purchase are one in the same, please
DON'T include the place of purchase for that component.
You must have accurate measurements for each variety in order to
calculate the components accurately. Canopy space, yield, variety,
flowering days, and plant spacing, etc will be needed independently
for each component (or variety). At the time of making your original
contribution mention that you have good info on each variety and I'll
help you with the component if you wish.
Here's an example of a hypothetical YOR entry:
Let's say you have 280 grams, 180 from variety N, and 100 from variety V.
Let's use a canopy sq/ft of 4.7 for the N, and 3.3 for the V, 8 total.
All grams and watts values are per square foot of garden canopy:
GRAMS MEDIUM cypher
Seq DRYWT HVST WATTS/LIGHTING STOCK@sqft variety hrs day garden
--- ----- ---- --------------- ---- ---- ---- ------- --- --- 1234567
000 35.0 MAN 53 HPS HYDR SEED 0.38 V,N 12 67 -------
000+ 56.7 ALL 53 HPS HYDR SEED 0.38 V,N 12 67 -------
000a 30.3 MAN 53 HPS HYDR SEED 0.30 V,Sensi 12 60 -------
000B 38.3 MAN 53 HPS HYDR SEED 0.43 N,Freddy 12 67 -------
Entry 000a is the component entry for the first variety, Shiva Shanti.
The lower case "a" says it's a single plant. Entry 000B is the component
for the second variety, Northern Lights. The upper case of the suffix
indicates data is an avg taken from many plants. If data for each of
those plants were available their suffixes would be a lower case "b", and
those entries would be used in lieu of the avg. Please note that seeds
for both components were purchased from Freddy's, but 000a were bred at
Sensi Seeds where 000B were bred at Freddy's. The entry for Seq 000+ is
not a component for a variety, but rather supplemental info about the
regular entry (see "About Seq(uence) numbers" above).
Note that this is all "optional", and not required to make a contribution.
If you know your variety mention it in your comments below. If it doesn't
exist in the key that's OK, I'll try to find a way to fit it in. If you
don't know that's OK too, remember variety is optional.
A seed bank report is regurlarly posted to adpc. Your opinions would be
helpful to the author and to others. So if possible include the seed
bank name and any info relating to them, their seed's performance, their
delivery time, etc., etc..
------------------------------------------------------
** hrs/day (optional) **
Along with the variety info you may want to include the number of days
it took the crop to mature from the first day you put the plants into
flowering to the day you harvested. Also needed is the number of hours
of light you gave your plants each day during this flowering period.
This info is for induction-to-harvest days ONLY, do not include any
days spent vegetating before you begun flowering.
The results will be posted as (n/nn) where n=hours of light, and
nn=number of days to mature.
------------------------------------------------------
** cypher garden (optional) **
Pick a letter from each of the cyphers that best describes that part
of your garden. Enter that letter under the numbered column for that
cypher. If you can't find a description, or would rather not include
that information, put a minus sign in its place. With the minus sign
all six characters will be filled to avoid any confusion over blanks.
If you can't find a description that applies to you please add a
comment to your entry stating what it would be.
An entry for an ebb/flow system using Geolite, a trellis, no CO2, General
Hydro nutrients, and no limiting factors would look like this:
